Default Stamps?

Has anyone seem these before?

Not sure if they are real and what they would have been used for.
No expert but wouldnt an ink stamp need to be reversed?
Could these be used for making titles? then wouldnt they need to be recessed?
Unless the titles were stamped...

I dont know!

Hi,
Are these blocks of wood? If so, I think they would be patterns for the titles.
Cheers, Tinto

Simply put, I'm sure someone can explain it better, Badges are made by striking a sheet of metal to create an image, Stamps are called 'Hob Dies' and you have reversed recessed front die, and a back die which can be plain or less detailed to create the badge/title.

So these are back hob dies?

Could these be steel master dies, used for creating front dies?

They are hard metal.

Im no expert in Brit items but what era would these be based on the titles?

Value?? I might be able to get 1 or all in a possible trade. I would offer them here for the forum membership if there is any interest however I need to know a value for the trade.

I had seen something similar many years ago but with a badge. Having asked my friend WY Carman then, he strongly believed that they were used to make the dies for badges cast in bazaars in India and Egypt. Even in some base workshops from molten spent cartridges. In fact, the term 'bazaar make' or 'bazaar cast' is used in the badge collecting circle and some badges are rare and saught after. Just like the REME's Quetta Badge' which has known to sell for three digits.

Hi,
That clears up the mystery.
Of interest, the NZAPS New Zealand Army Postal Service title fetches $NZ90.00plus. And the LeinsterRC title is not common.
Cheers, Tinto

Going by your pictures, I am pretty sure the Border die was manufactured by J. R. Gaunt and am thinking the NZAPS is also gaunt made, some photos of the backs would be very helpful in evaluating your dies.

The Leinster RC shoulder title was approved 4th Nov 1903 and used 'till disbandment in 1922. Source The National Archves WO359/13 P 47, I have no interest in dies so cannot offer anything with regard to value.

Hi Brent,
In answer to your question, I regret I do not have a NZAPS title.
However, I have a similar one NZAPC which has hexagonal lugs and no maker's name.
Regards, Tinto

Some of these appeared on Ebay some years ago, this one differs to the title shown in Westlake (1584) in the shape of the "T".
