Default 72nd Highlanders

Hello folks,

I have a group of 4 medals to a 72 Highlander (1880) and I would like to obtain a cap badge to go with them. I know nothing about badges, please can someone advise me on what to look out for. I gather that the badge I need can be expensive. Although one did sell on Ebay very recently for only £35.

Unfortunately, the pre 1881 glengarry badge you are looking for is the subject of modern re-striking and is being peddled by several questionable vendors on eBay. As an original item, it is very rare and would easily command a 3-figure sum. Pre-1881 is a difficult period to amass head-dress badges as it is either the glengarry or 1878-1881 helmet plate. The simplest badge would be the numerals 72 worn on the undress 'pork pie' hat but, alas, also very scarce although not as expensive as the others. Your other problem is that few Scottish regiments wore the helmet, favouring the bonnet and, again, bonnet badges are extensively re-struck today. It really is a minefield, isn't it ? Happy hunting. Hello David,

thank you for your reply. Considering the cost I think I may pass on buying a badge. But if one ever comes up I would very much appreciate if you let me know.

I have long been interested in cap badges of this period and have somewhat specialised in the Scottish regiments. As David points out, they are likely to command a three figure sum and I saw one in the summer going for £200 but I don't know whether he sold it at that price. Medals are a much cheaper way of collecting militaria and I wish you luck Norman.
