I too used to be very afraid of minty black finishes until I obtained a couple of genuine badges that are indeed this way.
Additionally, there were undoubtedly variations in the way a maker obtained these blackened finishes which surely makes things more difficult. Also, who's to say that a soldier himself may have applied some sort of blackening to a worn badge long ago. Suffice to say that the appearance of the finish is only one possible factor in judging whether a badge is genuine. CB |

Thanks CB,
And also to the other members who posted on this thread. It has been a worthy discussion in my opinion and has gone some way to easing my trepidation concerning further acquisitions in this area of interest. The badges of the London regiment fall naturally into my area of interest due to the many Green Jacket affiliations so maybe I'll finally pull my finger out and get somewhere with regard to producing an album to compliment my RBs. Thanks PJ for getting the ball rolling and congrats on the badge, even if you did beat me to it Regards to all. Ry |

One last issue I'd like to address concerns the 'softness' of the badge. I have read threads on the forum where this matter has been touched upon, and it seems this is not necessarily a definite negative, though I must confess that faced with a choice of the two, I would opt for the more solid example. I'd be interested to know if anybody has an example of a genuine, yet 'soft' badge - not necessarily 6th County of London, of course. I have a 'soft' unvoided KRRC badge which has an 11mm Gaunt mark (no dot), about which I am very confused. The mark (according to the forum's MM section) points towards blue skies, but the softness casts a bit of a shadow. I'll try and get it photographed and post it up. Possibly the subject for a new thread, but still pertinent to this thread's badge. PJ |

I received a KRRC from my brother-in-law recently. Comparing it with one I already had from the Sixties, it seems flat by comparison. There's no depth with the battle honours, the circlet containing "King's Royal Rifle Corps", or the top part of the cross just below "Celer et Audax". I think the latest one is probably a restrike. I'll try and post pictures later so you can see the difference. David
