Lincolnshire 'Housewife' sewing kit badge selection.
Hi all,
A recent addition to my Lincolnshire collection. These badges came in a black cloth Victorian era soldiers 'housewife' sewing kit. It has 10 stencilled on it for 10th Foot - pre-Cardwell reforms of 1881 but certainly the number was carried in for ease of marking items well past 1881. The badges and buttons are nice period items. One non-Lincs is the QVC domed RA button. I am fascinated by the 0 numerals that do not have cast lugs for pork pie numerals and I presume are shoulder strap numerals. Will measure when home. Now just to get a couple of 1's to match. Glenagarry and plate are nice. The smaller Sphinx with broken central lug is an earlier collar I think. No X pagri badge which was worn later. Could the damaged Sphinx be for the centre of another badge, as it has what looks like the remains of a wire 'staple' type fitting?

Good point Mark - wire fitting made me think of a boss badge Sphinx ? Not aware of one - I will look at the Sphinx on the glengarry bullion badge I have. Mine is silver but ORs ?
I thought that some of the early collars as I had thought most of the early ones had a central lug but may not be brazing stubs from a lug I agree. Cheers Dean |

very cool to find such a neat little time capsule still intact after all these years!

I always like finding small offerings of badges that are linked to a wearer as a slice of history, cheers Dean

Mystery solved - small Sphinx is from a HPC as has rough edges where it had tabs to go behind the central circlet, same size and the stubs match a central loop.
