Carving on Mackenzie Building @ Royal Military College of Canada
I'm curious about the limestone carving on this photo of the Mackenzie Building at the Royal Military College of Canada? It is not quite clear enough for me to identify.
The Mackenzie building was named in honour of Alexander Mackenzie, then Prime Minister of Canada. I think I see 1877, which is the year the building was built; If it is a V R, that could stand for Victoria Regina? At the time, the key leaders were: * Monarch - Victoria, Queen of Canada (1837–1901) * Governor General - Marquess of Dufferin and Ava (1872–1878) * Prime Minister - Alexander Mackenzie, Prime Minister of Canada (1873–1878) Victoria Edwards |

Carving on Mackenzie Building
Hello all
The RMC museum curator, Ross Mackenzie provided a response to my query wre. the carving on the Mackenzie Building at the Royal Military College of Canada. He advised that 'the carving over the doorway is the date "1877" and the letters "V" and "R" (for Victoria Regina). What we now call Mackenzie Building was originally known as the 'Education Building'-or sometimes the 'North Building' (from being on the north side of the square) and after, the new 'Education Building (now Currie) was built. it was the "Administration Building'. 'People' names for the various RMC Buildings weren't adopted until about 1950.' Victoria Edwards |
