Default WWI titles - unusual

Hi all,

I recently picked up a couple of unusual WWI shoulder titles.
The first made by Grigg of Richmond Surrey. I've seen cap badges before made by Grigg, but not a title.
The second title made by J. Gaunt. I suspect a cast taken from a standard shoulder title, the "1 INF" cut out and the "3" added.
Presumably a private purchase but was it for the original 3 SAI?
Unfortunately missing one lug.

Iain

Hi Iain

I have both, there are numerous variations, yes, the common consensus being private purchase items.

William had a very comprehensive selection possibly the best at one time.

Hi Brian,

I haven't seen either before but thanks. Do you think it's pp 3SAI then instead of wearing a numeral?

regards, Iain

Iain, quite possibly. They might even have been officers private purchase as they are rather scarce? This is just speculation but cannot see a normal private buying a fancy badge ahead of a few pints, when they were issued with the stock items.

Regards
Brian
