Default Galloway Rifle Volunteers

Hi all,

spotted a badge for sale on a dealers site - a WM Galloway Rifle Volunteers glengarry badge. I hadn't seen one before so I googled it and a lot came up in various guises - wm, brass, silver, solid back(cast?) and others. is this a common badge or is it much reproduced for some reason hence the numbers that come up ? An attractive badge, but what should you look for if it's a good one ?

Mark

Mark,

Its one of a series of rare Scottish glengarry badges which have been faked to death.

They appear in all metals and I have never seen a real one.

If you ID the seller I am sure we can have a look.

regards

Hi Simon,

the one I've looked at today is just up on Geoff Newman's site. I am not questioning his badge, but I am looking for pointers on such badges to try and tell if good or bad...

Cheers, Mark

Mark,

That one is original and a nice badge at a good price.

An original should be just like that one, WM and two loops, crisp and quality badge.

regards

That's a very nice badge. A post -1905 VB glengarry of the KOSB obviously never took up the VB title on their insignia and continued as the Galloway RV.

  • In 1880 consolidated as The Galloway ((Kirkcudbright and Wigtown) Rifle Volunteer Corps.
  • In 1891 re-designated as The Galloway (Kirkcudbright and Wigtown) Volunteer Rifle Corps.
  • In 1908 merged into 5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, The King's Own Scottish Borderers (TF).
