14th / 20th Hussars (head facing right)
This badge is noted in P. Taylor's book collecting anodised badges No 27. Quite a rare bird which I hoped members may be interested to see.
The "Hawk" is made by Firmin London and I suspect was a factory cock up! Best Regards. Colin |

My suspicion is that somebody used the die for the 6th Gurkha Rifles arm badge

Hi Mike,
Yes, that may well be the case that the same die was used? Although the 6th Gurkha arm badge pattern sealed in 1965 was silver a/a & lugged. I will see if I can dig out an arm badge to compare the dies later. Regards Colin |

Is the gold on the FL black hawk just on the sceptre and orb or is the black over the gold on the whole bird.
It seems odd that the slider etc on the FR hawk doesnt show signs of having been blackened. If thats correct, then i presume that it was originally gold anodised as the FL hawk was originally and the black has been added at a later time |

Chaps,
I have one of these weird badges too. I cant recall the maker or if it is painted black or made black - as it were. Will check when I'm back at home. My thought too was that it was a 'mis-used' 6th Gurkha arm badge. If I recall though, my one does show signs of wear - which is even more puzzling. Regards all Bess |

Ive just had a look at my 6GR arm badge, there is an inverted teardrop shaped depression on the rear between the wings. Its difficult to tell from the image that Colin has posted if the depression is present on his badge. Perhaps he could enlighten us ,or Bess .
Saying that, I could be barking up the wrong tree. Possibly the arm badge I have is of a different period to the FR hawk. |

Hi Mike, Bess,
Sorry about the slow reply I was called into work last night. Anyways, I have managed to hunt down said Gurkha "Hawk" in my arm badge collection. My Gurkha badge appears to be the same die as Mikes with the Teardrop on the rear of the badge. The right facing headed Hawk does not have the same depression behind / under the slider & does have different characteristics. IMO these 2 hawks clearly do not come from the same nest! I have attached a pic albeit a poor one for you too have a look at the reverse of the two badges. Regards Colin |

I was getting a little confused here, until, I realised you were all talking about the observers right!
Now I know mine are not all wrong. Marc |

Hi Marc,
Yes, a little confusing! Taylor has put in his book "head facing Right" so I have used his terminology for the non ex military Forum members amongst us! Don't throw all those badges in the spares box just yet. Regards Colin |

Ive just looked at Mr Cunniffe`s cavalry badges. Strangely, both of the gold hawks he has, with the slider fixed to the chest rather than the head are under suspicion as dubious. How can we put it, geneticly engineered sounds about right.

Could the suspect badge be made from a collar badge die?

Interesting thought Marc. What collar badge though ? The only hawk collars i know of were the 14/20 bandmaster and laterly by the hussars and light dragoons band i think. The hussars and light dragoons would be far too recent to be in the frame.
