1918 RAF Officers cap badge

This is 2nd Lt. Frederick Turner, killed in action on 27 September 1918. Puzzled as to the cap badge. He appears to be still wearing his West Yorkshire Regiment cap badge. He had progressed from 8 Officer Cadet Battalion, Lichfield on 10th August 1917, becoming a Commissioned Officer with the Royal Flying Corps on 27th November 1917
Are we assume he was playing fast and loose with dress regulations for this photograph ? The jacket does not appear to be RFC pattern. Rather confusing

Regs were very relaxed within the RFC , as many officers came from other regiments , used old tunics and mixed insignia , as this officer has done .

I believe the situation with many officers coming from other regiments was that they were on attachment initially, and not all would be fully transferred to the RFC- sort of probation while the RFC decided on the matter. Regards, Paul.

Turner was actually a member of the West Yorkshire Regiment, he was attached from his regiment for duties with number 20 Squadron RAF and was simply wearing the SD that he was entitled to.

Thanks Steve, I gathered the photo was an early one in his flying career.
