Default 78th Division formation sign numerals.

Does anyone know the significance of the white numerals on a blue background worn by the 78th Division?

I have fairly good evidence that the number 49 was worn by the 214th Field Coy (46th North Midland Divisional Engineers) and possibly also by Royal Artillery units attached to the 78th Division. Can anyone please confirm?

I have found the answer to my question in a post of Mike Jackson's dating from 2008.

"The sign of a white 50 on a cobalt blue square indicated (on signboards, vehicles and uniforms) the second of three Field Coys RE in a British Infantry Division 1944/45. Numerals 48, 49, 51 and 52 indicated other RE subunits in the Inf Div. The sign appears in both EonF (as per your example) and Printed. Although universally used as a vehicle marking it was not universally worn on uniform. Among the formations that wore these RE flashes were 3 Inf Div, 49 (WR) Inf Div and 78 Inf Div. Mike".

Found a 2009 post about Vehicle Tac Signs with a link that shows R.E ones.

The link here shows the breakdown of infantry divisions for WWII in more detail

40 - Headquarters, Royal Engineers (RE)
48 - Field Park Company, RE
49 - Field Company, RE
50 - Field Company, RE
51 - Field Company, RE
52 - Divisional Bridging Platoon, RE
