Cap Badge / Uniform ID

I believe that the attached photo is of my Gt Grandfather and he served in India in the early 1920's. I am trying to identify the uniform and specifically the cap badge that might affirm what unit he served.

If anyone has any further information I would like to hear more. Unfortunately I don't have the original photo and this is a zoomed version.

Hi Alan,

I have delved a little deeper and I can see from a census in 1911 from Ireland that his eldest was born in India abt 1893 and his last child, born in India, was abt 1902 so yes i do agree with your comment, thank you.

Agreed, a Victorian CDV with the Queen Victorias Royal Cypher below a QVC.

Thank you Simon for the information. I would assume that this isn't the regimental cap badge then? Can I ask what the CDV means in your response?

He appears to have been an officer on the Unattached List.

Yes, I agree with Hoot. Unattached officers in India. A similar badge was worn in Britain, but with VR rather than VRI under the crown. It was also worn by garrison staff SNCOs on a long service list and past the normal retirement age. This looks likely here as he is wearing an other ranks style of patrol jacket. The type of forage cap shown was worn between 1880 and 1902 by officers and staff grade sergeants.

Thank you for your response. This has now started to build a picture of his service in India. The next thing I need to do is establish how he became to be in India.
