Default DLI VB badges

Hi All,

I am trying to find out how many variants of the DLI VB maltese cross badges there are ie 2nd VB victorian and kings crown versions. I believe there is a 6th VB badge which is quite rare.

Cheers in advance, Mark

I’m sure there’s a thread on here, Andy Plewa started it from memory.

Default DLI

So, so far I have seen or been told of :-

2nd VB - QVC and KC in gilded metal, white metal and a silver plated Officers.

4th VB - QVC and KC white metal.

6th VB - Officers blackened brass (K and K 1747)

and possibly a 2nd VB in WM without crown and tablet ?

Can anyone add to this from having any others or having a photo of other ?

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark,

What I can add peripherally is that the King's Crown 1 VB within the Bugle badge worn by the 1st VB was worn in blackened finish by the cyclist company. It has a combination of loops and a screw post attachment.

The 2nd VB King's Crown Bugle badge was worn on the slouch hat 1904-08 and that is one theory as to why there are these pattern badges and the Maltese Cross pattern badges as the Maltese Cross pattern was worn on Full Dress caps.

There is a 4 VB within a King's Crown Bugle device on an Officer's shoulder belt plate but the badge itself was not adopted by the 4th VB. The example I have seen was dated Mar 1906.

No worries Mark. I tried to research this with DLI photographic records but made little headway as often the resolution of electronic or printed images versus originals made it inconclusive.

The 5th Batt. with non-voided crowns is a case in point.

Cheers Dean

You might want to note KLR VB cap badges for comparison.

1st VB - S&G and BM - I have only ever seen one BM die (not variant) from Firmin.
2nd VB - Blk GM, two dies that I know of (both Firmin).
5th VB - OR WM, three dies that I know of (two QVC and one KC)
6th VB - two that I know of - curiously the Firmin die comes in WM and GM (looks v genuine) and another (anon) die (what I call D11, used for other reg and TF badges)

Greetings.

Re Maltese Cross style badges, I have:
2nd VB, QVC white metal.
4th VB QVC gilding metal
4th VB KC gilding metal.

I've just had a look, there are no pictures of them in my outdated album, I will try and post pictures of them tomorrow.

Regards.

Brian

Apologies for the sideways on jobbie, for some reason no matter what I tried it wouldn't sit straight, probably far too much Vaux Bitter.
