Two "Tiptaft" CEF Badges
PLEASE NOTE - THESE BADGES WILL BE FOR SALE, SO PLEASE DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE THREAD IF YOU OBJECT TO MY REQUEST FOR INFORMATION! I've just acquired these rather nice CEF (?) badges, 38th Ottawa and 4th Toronto Mounted Rifles, both are in "Mint" condition and bear the makers mark of "Tiptaft B'Ham". Would any Canadian collectors please like to give an estimate of their value, as the Makers Mark of "Tiptaft" tends to elevate usual prices! Interested to hear the Canadian reply Andy as Tiptaft seem to have made a good number of their badges. I wonder how the numbers work out regards badges UK made to Canadian made. Regards, Paul.

Hi Andy, The actual designation is the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles Regiment who had their HQ / recruiting depot in Toronto, but actually recruited throughout central Ontario, including my area of northeastern Ontario.
I am not really sure Tiptaft adds a lot to the value of the badges. This may be due to the confusion with the two patterns of the 4 CMRR badge. The first pattern reads only 4 CMR, for 4 Canadian Mounted Rifles, which was not the correct designation for the battalion. In 1916 the 4 CMR badge was replaced by the 4 CMRR pattern, for 4 Canadian Mounted Rifle Regiment. As the battalion was already at the front by the time this change was made, most of the badges were procured in the UK, from Tiptaft. There is one un-marked pattern of the 4 CMRR badge which may be an Ellis pattern. Ellis used the somewhat unique flat pattern stamped sheet metal lugs. The Tiptaft pattern of 4 CMRR badge appears to be more common than the other pattern. The 4 CMR badges are much more difficult to find. The 38th is a fairly common badge for CEF. There are several makers including Tiptaft, Gaunt, Hemsley, and Inglis. No real premium for any particular maker as far as I have seen.

I think that the common CEF cap badges are overpriced.
I will offer you GPB 50.00 for the pair. I'm sure you can get more on eBay, but the offer is there. Phil

Hi,
If you can confirm the dimensions of the badges. 38th CEF collars run in the $30 - $45 in my experience. The cap badge might crack $65 - $70. I landed complete set of officer's for a buck and a quarter. Not so lucky in the ORs. The prices here really are all over the board. The 38th is a very common unit or I seem to have no problem tripping over them. The condition is vg I might just bid. The pricing is in Canadian money. £1.00 = $1.56 Cdn (31 July 2013) The pricing is my experience however, others may disagree. Chris
