ATA grouping
Guys,
am waiting for this grouping to come along. I hoped at first that it would be a female ATA members insignia, but she is wearing a standard RAF badge in the picture, and so i must assume the owner was her sweetheart. WIll post better pictures when in my hands. I believe the insignia is fairly scarce and i have put on a few facebook groups and had a couple of interested parties. Are thse a particular pattern? OR/Offrs, 1st or 2nd pattern? The capbadge, is it from a peaked cap, or side cap? regards Jon ATA grouping 1 all items.jpg ATA grouping 2 photo.jpg ATA grouping 4 front insignia.jpg ATA grouping 5 rear insignia.jpg |

I 1944 a group of WAAFs joined the ATA and we're trained from scratch rather than already holding a pilots license as had previously been the case. So the fact the photo is of a WAAF is not implausible.
However there are numerous fakes of ATA insignia and it's always the bullion wings and cap badges. Many different patterns by a number of different companies. Not too keen on those shown, especially as both backings have been removed. They generally have black hessian type backings. I'd avoid. |

WAAF pieces
I will see what the ATA museum says Alex as the supposedly have a vast amount of original pieces in their collection that have been donated.
There was no reference to ATA when I bought them so there was no attempt by the seller to deceive. I will wait until I get my hands on them. Good news on the WAAF in late 44, as the picture is of 1945. Let's see what the museum and other forums come up with. Regards Jon |

Some of mine, including the near unique Air Gunners wing.

If the photo is dated 1945 that would rule her out Jon as the ATA was disbanded in 1945 and she'd have to have left the WAAF and transferred to ATA early in 1944.
Re the museum, which one do you mean? There is one in Maidenhead that has some insignia on display and a few bits in cupboards and drawers and there is another collection at Cosford. To be honest neither has experts that can tell original from repro - they'd probably only advise they are ATA badges. I've been collecting almost 40 years and repro ATA stuff has been around for at least 30, as my first few pieces were such. |

I forgot I had this on the phone. It's the insignia on display at the Maidenhead museum. ATA bullion cap badge at top. The item below is frequently mistaken for a cap badge but it is in fact a rank badge in rayon. |

closer pictures
Here are some scans of the insignia that arrived yesterday.
The rear cover has come away from the cap badge. None of the threads melt, but burn. ATA front.jpg ATA front 2.jpg ATA rear.jpg ATA rear insignia.jpg Dont know why the pictures have been inserted on their side, as they are correctly orientated on the laptop. |

Interesting but I'm afraid for me a no go.
The fact both badges have the backings missing is too convenient, and there seems to be little or no tarnishing to the bullion. If the WAAF photo is 1945 dated too it would rule her out as being ATA. A number were recruited direct from the WAAF in 1944 and remained with ATA until it was disbanded the following year. I'm not aware of any of them returning to the WAAF. |

Whilst I don't want to appear stupid, I am more than a little confused, what makes this a related group, who do the medals belong to and what makes this particular WAAF a potential member of the ATA, you presumably know her name, do you have her Service and Release Book and what other documentation do you have?
