The device on the trade badge represents the north star and magnetic north. (True north and the compass needle for magnetic north.)
In the link John provided, there is a correction required. These trade badges were instituted in 1956 (not 1958). In addition to the skill sets identified by Mark, the Gp 3 Intelligence trades also included air plotter, intelligence collator and radio intelligence collator.
