I did consider the "S", I have checked my collection and I have a Large WM 28th London (Artists) pre 1936 with the same reverse (no "S") as yours and it looks its age.

I also have a large pre 1922 Leinster Officers spun back button with the HOBSON & SON LONDON back mark.

Was there a period when Hobson just had the one son early in the twentieth century?

Are we talking about this overpriced (IMHO) example on ebay?

Many Military Tailors sub-contracted badges, buttons and other accessories for officers uniforms, sometimes from the same contractors used by the government..

Hobsons are now based at Unit 4 Isabella Rd, Garforth, Leeds LS25 2DY and now mainly civilian workwear

It is a list of Hobson backmarks seen on ebay and on buttons in my collection. I have contacted Hobson in the past and they replied they do not make buttons and do not hold stock.
Over time I have downloaded a couple of images to which I do not have copyright and will not reproduce on the forum.

One is a small shield with KC and text:
Hobson & Sons, Military Outfitters, 1.3 & 5
Lexington Street, Golden Square, London W

The other one is an 1812 One Penny Token from Sheffield:
Payable at S. Hobson & Son's button Manufacturers
(I have not done any research)

Member Fougasse1940 published a brief history of Hobson's in 2012 on the forum.
Member Rex added information from old directories.

Attached is a PDF of a 2007 document. I did not write down where I got it from.

A very quick search shows at least seven companies involved in metal working/cutlery etc in Sheffield that were named Hobson , so possibly no connection to London firm.

An Illustrated London article mention Mr.Charles Hobson 'organised the company' in 1850 and his sons Messrs. C and E Hobson in 1872 established their headquarters in St.Martin's Lane.

Also found a timeline :

94 St. Martin's Lane, SW. & 43 & 44 Artillery Place, Woolwich Street
1873-1877

37 & 38 Windmill Street, W. & 43 & 44 Artillery Place, Woolwich Street
1878-1884

37 & 38 Little Windmill Street, W.
1885-1886

1, 3, & 5 Lexington Street, Golden
Square, W.
1887-1899
