Default 18th Hussars

Any thoughts on these two 18th Hussars badges?

Thanks for looking and apologies for them being sideways!

The looped one is fake.

Could you post clearer images of the die cast badge please. It’s very out of focus.

Thanks Luke, any pointers you can give on these badges would be appreciated.

I hope these photos are better

They had several cap badge designs between 1901-10 so I doubt that many were made so they are scarce designs. It has encouraged a lot of fakery to fill the demand. Missing from my collection is the 1902 K/C version of the QVC version shown on the left.

That is a very strange badge. The method of construction and finish do not seem compatible with a slider fixing. The slider appears modern to me. It doesn’t look like it’s from the typical fake die but given the above it is not one I would have in my collection.

Thanks Luke, I must admit when I got them, I thought both of them weren’t right. The cast one has avery rough back and looks like those East German badges of the nineties. The lugged one felt wrong, but I didn’t have the experience on what is a good one.

Appreciate everyone’s help and comments. Jim Flood has 3 for sale on his site, they seem quite good??

Which site are you referring to as both British Empire Militaria and Minden have several examples of this pattern.

Pictures or stock codes would be helpful.

That website is a real hole…

53259 = fake
52912 = fake
50926 = fake

A hattrick so keeps the (fake) match ball.

Oh dear!

I’m looking for good OR ones covering that period of 18th Hussars, any ideas where some may be for sale. Genuine ones of course!

Both Alan’s badges are good examples to study, there is another die where a void exists at 6 o’clock but these are fully die struck in appearance from the reverse rather than Alan’s types which appear almost semi-die cast. It’s hokum that this void must be present for the badge to be genuine.

Other ranks badges are found on sliders, often the early post 1902 long slider, sometimes these are shortened or cut down like my badge below. From memory every or almost every slider on these badges has a crimp mark.

The fully die cast badges with the void on loops sold by many dealers as cap badges are in fact collar.

I find that these genuine 18H slider cap badges are quite scarce. Virtually every one I seem to see is either bad or has lugs, which I just learned (thanks Luke) are collars.
