Default WW2 Officers Merchant Navy badge with purple underlay to crown...Chaplain or Doctor??

This is another item that i will be offering on here soon, just wondered can anyone confirm why it has purple under crown ?? never seen this before,i thought maybe Chaplain, doctor ??? or possibly engineer as an after thought...any ideas ??

It may be engineering but not sure. I doubt Medical or Chaplain though

I have a couple of these with purple backings, one is padded with a domed coronet. In my opinion it is just a make variation and not aimed at engineers or chaplain's.
