Cap badge of the Papua New Guinea Volunteer Rifles. To the best of my knowledge the collars were the same size.

Thanks Chris - I agree with you there.
Here's a question - I have seen anodised PNGVR shoulder titles - do you know when they would have been worn? Same goes for PIR as well - I've seen anodised titles and would like to know when they replaced the brass one. Any ideas? Mick |

Mick,
I have never seen the anodised titles, nor badges for that matter. Not sure when they would have been introduced. Sorry, I can't help. Cheers Chris |

is this the badge for the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force to New Guinea (ANMEF)? Where would one find one of these? |

Papua New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (PNGVR)
The PNGVR was an Army Reserve Unit formed and disbanded in PNG (1951-1974)
and part of the Australian Army. The anodised badges were designed so as not need polishing. There is a NGVR/PNGVR Museum situated in Brisbane, Qld. And I'll be happy to answer any question one has on the Australian Army. Cheers - |

Hi Folks,
I believe this badge when worn on the PNGVR beret also had a colour felt backing. Does anyone happen to know what was the colour of this backing cloth? I've heard blue and also been told it may have been red. Mick

As Slick Mick said there was no specific badge for thr AN&MEF in WW1, almost all Aussie troops in WW! wore the Rising Sun badge, any other badges are unofficial. The AN&MEF was raised in 3 weeks and despatched immediatly to Rabaul to take the German radio station which it did on 11th Sept 1914. Australia loosing its first casualties in this action. Three Official WW1 badges
Hi all,
Besides the numerous unoffical WW1 badges, there were in fact two other official badges worn by the AIF in WW1 apart from all the maker variations of the rising sun. These were the anchor badge worn by the Naval Bridging Train which served at Gallipoli, and the RAA cypher siege brigade, made by Stokes Melb and Gill Birmingham. In the Sydney Hyde Park War Memorial Museum I saw some incredible photos a couple of years ago, unfortunately poor quality newsprint, of very early photos of the Naval Bridging Train before the anchor badge was struck (possibly as early as 1914). These showed group photos of the unit which had just been formed out of the Royal Australian Naval Brigade, with officers and POs wearing Navy badges on their caps with khaki army uniforms. I would love to see better quality pictures, no doubt they exist somewhere. |
