Captain Frederick Henry Ward served with the 23rd Battalion,
© IWM (HU 96752)Captain Frederick Henry Ward served with the 23rd Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force. He was from Kyneton, Victoria, Australia. He left Australia on 8 May 1915 as a second lieutenant in the Australian Imperial Force. He was promoted to lieutenant on 12 September 1915 whilst serving in Gallipoli, and later made a captain in February 1916. In March 1916, he was sent to France. In June 1916, he was recommended for promotion to a major and attended an Officer Selection Interview in July. Thereafter, he rejoined his battalion, which was engaged in the Battle of Pozieres, Somme. He died on 2 August 1916, aged 22. He is buried at the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension.
