Yes I always like a badge with original backing, a medal with original ribbon.

Grigg were originally medalists and soon became a local supplier for the SA Brigade who set up their depot and hospital in that part of Surrey after their arrival, those particular die cast officers badges are fairly scarce and normally have a dark bronze finish applied.

Nice badge Alex,
I have two of those Grigg made badges and both are gilding metal with no sign of been bronzed at all. Probably South African officers preference whether he wanted bronzed badges or not as I see many pictures of SA officers with either. Regards Steven |

Thanks everyone. I had no idea it was an officer's badge so very happy with that!

Well, I did say "normally" have the bronze finish applied, I don't think I've encountered an example without it's original finish, be that mercurial fire gilt or dark bronze, so I'd certainly be interested to see a gilding metal example.

I believe Alex's example in the first post is gilding metal !!

From the photographs, I think it is merely an alloy, but, certainly not a copper rich one to plate in mercurial gilt, I now do wonder if some might have been individually bought and subsequently worn by rank and file members of the four regiments.

Hi Alex,
I also have a "Grigg" made cap badge. Mine is 48mm, ie the large cap badge. With yours being a 4 SAI, (with tartan,) is it the usual smaller 34mm size? regards, Iain
