IMO they are Militia badges. The bladed officers badge is 1905-08. The SA honour was awarded in 1905. A bi-metal one was sold here: https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/a...7-a5de009c64c2 The second is a militia cap badge design. The VB had an additional scroll with their VB title on. The miilitia badge was, I suspect, worn on the glengarry up to circa 1905 when peaked caps saw a new badge introduced. Both badges had the same central motto and blank arms. I am not sure about this badge in a bronze finish so it may be a copy. Hopefully a Border collector will be able to confirm this. Last edited by Alan O; 27-03-17 at 09:43 AM. |

Not strictly Border militia but some great pictures of 2nd VB soldiers wearing FSC with collars on and a couple of slouch hats circa 1901.
http://www.sole.org.uk/ssoldiers.htm This is the 1st VB badge which is the same design as your large one but in w/m and with the VB scroll added. https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/a...4-a5de009c64c2 This Officers' Glengarry is attributed to the Border militia bn https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/a...7-a5de009c64c2 |

Ray,
I agree too that they (in your first post) are militia badges, the smaller on the left I would be very happy with, I do have concerns on the larger badge and would hope it is not blackened brass. I would also personally prefer to see it die cast rather than stamped although that's not saying it is wrong and it's probably best someone to handle it before writing it off. Paul |

The lugged one on the right looks poorly cast, is it white metal? The bladed badge looks ok but could have had its bronzing removed/polished back and been re-bronzed to the front Paul |

Hi Paul,
The badge which has been rubbed on the high spots looks brass to me. Ray |

Hi Ray,
If you could give it a light clean and hopefully bring out some detail and take another image it may show traces of a motto around the ring in the centre. There are a few poorly cast/die stamped badges around with many of the fakes showing lack of detail particularly on the 4 Lions. There are some with good detail but with what looks like a rubbed motto I do think are ok but others may have a different opinion Paul |

Look like some lovely pre-1905 badges. Post 1905 the SA honours were added and the badge was made larger.

All very nice Ray, the QVC ones show up quite often, the Kings Crown ones being the scarcer and probably only in use for two years, there is a slidered one on Minden Militaria at the moment if you haven't already seen it.
Nice to see them Paul |

Ray, what a lovely set of badges, not at all envious... The Victorian badge dates from February 1897 to October 1901. The KC looped badge dates from October 1901 to 1903, the slidered one from March 1903 to July 1905. As stated, after that the badge was enlarged to accomodate the South Africa battle honours.

Ray,
A nice Silver Hallmarked badge, I have two similar but unmarked one bearing a QE11 crown but I can assume they are Gaunt as yours has similar construction. I have added my Bent & Parker example to show a different style Paul |
