Rank stripes on sleeve pipers belt and dirk. Later to become famous as the "Piper of Tobruk" for his exploits during the breakout, continued playing despite being hit three times. |

Quite a character, captured in Crete escaped from prison camp in Athens with SAS man Roy Farran reached Turkey by boat. Obtained false documents from Syrian Consulate made his own way back to N. Africa to rejoin his Regiment. Shot three times at Tobruk. Crossed the Rhine with the 7th Bn and ended his military career as RSM 4/5th Black Watch 1956 awarded DCM MBE. Married a German girl he had to fight very long and hard to bring back to UK.
