Hello SW
Is there a motto, or writing to the bottom scroll? Gerard

Can't make it out but it's a bit like the Duke Of Wellingtons Regiment but parts are missing. I was going to bid on it but I'm concerned it's a fake.

It has the 'look' to me like a war-raised or Territorial Force unit badge.

Hello
Most, if not all, of these bugles with badges are indeed fakes. A genuine British Army bugle should have a WD and broad arrow mark and probably a date but beware as even these are being put on fake bugles these days. Hope this is of some help. The badge on the bugle is that of the KUMAON REGIMENT (previously 19th Hyderabad Regt). Last edited by Toby Purcell; 21-09-15 at 08:06 PM. |

Thanks guys, I was dodgy about it but you've confirmed what I thought. Exactly the same bugle with same badge on Ebay in County Cork at the moment. The badge even has the same illegible motto. I'll give it a wide berth.

I should have checked in here sooner myself. SW posted the same question on the Great War Forum.
I'd have saved over an hour of digging into Scottish clan crests and flicking through K&K! For general edification, I attach the Kumaon badge on the fleaBay fake bugle that I found for SW over on the GWF. SW's picture comes from a Belfast auction house catalogue. He went to the auction viewing in person and reported that the badge on the Belfast bugle was defaced in the identical manner to this fleaBay lot based out of Cork. Useful for folk to know what to look out for. The Belfast auction also had another bugle - almost certainly another fake - with an RA badge stuck on the bell. The two Belfast fakes have a much duller patina than the Cork fleabay example, which has been polished to within an inch of its life. All three examples have identical, very fresh-looking bugle cords. I found this useful and rather droll information on a Canadian Boer War museum website about spotting fakes spread over several webpages: Those Faking Bugles! Sleuthing Fake Great War Bugles Fake Gallipoli Bugle Four Faking Aussie Bugles Fake Boer War Bugle - QOCH (an excellent demolition of an eBay fake) A lesson to us all in how far these counterfeiters will go to hoodwink the unwary ... particularly the last page on the QOCH with VC associations complete with picture based provenance. Well guys, I can lay this to rest. The bugle sold for £18 tonight and the Artillery bugle for £12 so I have to assume they were spotted as fakes. Sorry if I didn't give enough info in my first post, I was posting on more than one forum to be sure of getting an answer before I wasted my hard earned cash.
I have just started collecting and it's my intention to put together all the badges or militaria linked to my families regiments. If I can pick up other stuff along the way then all the better but don't tell my wife. LOL |
