Default Any ideas??

A few more bits which I've been unable to identify:

1. A pair of brass collar dogs. A Lion carrying a flag with "X" on, standing on top of a tower. Fittings are a single hexagon down the middle.Tyneside Scottish TA. I thought I'd seen that Lion before, but couldn't remember where.

2. A silver accroutrement for a cross belt (I think). Probably from a piper? Any way of telling which Regiment and when? Looks quite modern.

3. A pair of 78 Division slip ons. But with a white 51 on blue beneath. Came with a Royal Tank regiment cap badge (see photo 4) with close loops. 256 Field Coy Royal Engineers, part of 78 Division. The RTR cap badge is not related (confirmed since by seller)

5. A pair of rank slides to the Royal Navy. A quick Google shows Midshipman, but why not on shoulder boards? What order of dress are these for (and when)? Apparently I've even pictured them upside down. Tell I never had anything to do with the RN.New enough to be off the new RN PCS uniform.

As ever, grateful for any info and will amend this post to show answers.

Hi Ian

The first pic - pair of collars are almost certainly Tyneside Scottish (TA).

David

PS.... I think at the time they were worn they had become a RA (TA) unit, but still known as Tyneside Scottish.

Re your comment on Midshipman and shoulder boards. I don't think Midshipmen wear shoulder boards - rank for RN Midshipman & RN Cadet is usually a collar tab. But you probably know more about RN than I do!

I think Tim probably has the answer, above.

Default 78 Division slip ons

The pair of 78 Division slip ons with a white 51 on blue beneath were I think worn by an R.E. Company, not sure which Company.

Default 51st Eng.Company

Not having Waring's book I was not sure, yes that would be the obvious answer.

I regret that on this rare occasion John Waring was incorrect. 51 in white on cobalt blue was the generic serial for one of the Fd Coys RE in an Inf Div c 1944. This design was primarily used as a vehicle marking - other RE elements in an Inf Div used (in white on cobalt blue) 48 the Div RE Fd Park Coy, 49 the senior Fd Coy RE, 50 the intermediate Fd Coy Re, 51 the junior Fd Coy RE and 52 the Div Bridging Pl. In 78 Inf Div the RE orbat was 281 Fd Park Coy RE, 214 Fd Coy RE, 237 Fd Coy RE and 256 Fd Coy RE. So the combination illustrated will have been worn (and displayed on unit signs and vehicles) by 256 Fd Coy RE. The RE elements of some but not all Inf Divs in NW Europe and Italy also wore the 48 - 51 flashes on uniform. 3 Inf Div and 49 (WR) Inf Div spring to mind. End of lecture! Mike
