Button/Cipher ID Please
Can anyone ID the cipher/regiment here, please?
Unknown.jpg I dare say it is patently obvious to the initiated, but as a beginner I am struggling a little. Cheers, P. Last edited by Peter J; 09-03-10 at 06:12 PM. |

Hi
I've never seen this before but it may be RGJ. Royal Green Jackets, pre 1902? Cheers, Alex |

Thanks Alex,
I too thought it might say 'RGJ' Royal Green Jackets, so your dating helps a great deal. Cheers, P. |

The RGJ were a 1960s creation and have never used a rose in their insignia.

Could there be a Yorkshire connection? The rose is slightly different I know, but just a thought.

Best to put 'Button' in your title Peter to draw in the experts. There is also a Military Button section you could try if they don't find it here. Cheers, Paul.

Hi Peter,
The initials are actually "RGT". It is a British Yeomanry button to the "Repton & Gresley Troop", pre 1864. According to the book, it looks as if all the buttons were made in Gilt. Repton & Gresley Troop : 1832: Raised. 1838: Disbanded. 1843: Re-raised. 1864: Regimented as the Derbyshire Yeomanry Cavalry. (Source : Ripley & Darmanin's book on Yeomanry buttons. Page 10 Nos. 21 Button in Gilt). Cheers Ian |
