4th Bn AIF/19th Bn AIF
My relative Harold Arthur Retford enlisted in the 4th Bn AIF and later transferred to 4th Bn AIF in which he was KIA F&F on 31.10.1916 as L/Cpl 3219.
Did these Battalions have a dedicated cap badge and if so could any forumite post a photo of same ? My thanks. |

hi
the simple answer is no, they wore the rising sun on thier hat and collars as well as the word australia in dulled brass on thier shoulder. they did however wear a distinctive colour patch on thier upper arm to id the unit they were with. bc |

For the 4th Bn AIF the colour patch was a white over green rectangle and for the 19th Bn AIF it was a brown over green diamond. The rectangle was the 1st Division (1st, 2nd and 3rd Brigades) and 4th Brigade shape and the diamond was the 2nd Division shape.
