S.African, maybe? Looks a bit springbok-ish.

Hi joepe,

I see that is your first post, so welcome to the forum.

That looks rather like a duiker antelope to me, to be found in many places in Sub Sahara Africa, and the background to the badge could be a heraldic representation of hills or mountains, or perhaps coal mine dumps.

I am trying to figure out what location the above might suggest.

Kind regards,

John

Thanks David. I am pretty sure it is South African, but which unit.

Yes John. It was my first post. I am sure it is South African. It could be a Commando Unit shoulder badge, but I can not find positive identification. But thanks anyway.

There you've got me. I know absolutely nothing about S.African badges. There must be someone from S.Africa who can help.

This is the arm flash of Boegoeberg Commando, South African Defence Force. Commando units were disbanded some years ago now. They were part time area defence units.

Joe - glad to see you joined the forum and are getting some results.

Madziro - didn't Boegoeberg Comdo have a black and gold flash showing two buchu ('boegoe') flowers and a stylised mountain (berg)?

The unit had two flashes. The one in the books you refer to is the older version and was replaced by the "mystery" flash at about the same time that several Commando units were converted to Citizen Force regiments in the late 1980s -1990s. Regt Hillcrest / Commando is a good example of another one, as is Munitoria Regiment, both in the Pretoria area. There are a few more of these converted commando units and most have their own insignia. Have attached a few examples for interest.

Dudley
