Default Royal Irish Rifles of Royal Ulster Rifles

I recently bought a RUR badge for NZ$18 and am keen to find out why it looks so different from another one I have in my collection. Apart from being more worn it is definitely smaller, in particular the scrolling and writing on the bottom and the number of feathers on the wings. Any info would be gratefully received.

Above are some pics of the two badges in question. the one I am holding in the 3rd pic is the larger of the two.

Cheers Rob

Rob

this is curious, I have not come across a size differene like this before other than the smaller silver plate officer's OSD collar badge introduced in c. 1910.

The smaller badge you show is not this collar.

Would you post a picture of the back? I thought I saw a white metal slider on one of the badges. which opens up a small possibility of a Franklin Mint item.

Thanks John. I will take another picture this afternoon. the bigger of the two has had the slider removed by a previous owner. There is no name on the smaller one of the tow. Look forward to hearing more.

Rob

the smaller one with slider intact looks fine to me.

Regarding the one on the left, what has happened with the fastner?, it looks as if it once had a slider that is now gone and is that a squeezed loop at the bottom?

I posted a collection of badges from the Royal New Zealand Engineers museum in January. The badge with the duff fastener is, unfortunately, symptomatic of all the badges on that collection. They have all been removed and replaced with pins in order to fix them onto the wooden backing on the frame. A real shame but only if they were for sale.

Thanks heaps for the feedback on the wee Royal Ulster Rifles badge. It is a fair bit smaller but not bad for the equivalent of a fiver in New Zealand.

I'll flick some more stuff up here if I need the help.

Cheers from NZ

for future reference would you please indicate the height of both versions, this is not something that I have come across before.

Rob

did you ever get a chance to measure the smaller badge? It is very intriguing.

John,

sorry I sort of let that thread die there.

I just measured it and from the tip of the crown to the centre of the scroll it is 51mm in length whereas the other one I have it 53mm

Hope this helps and I'm glad my brother told me about your post as I was just about to list it for sale in NZ.

Cheers

Rob
