Gaunt MGC
Hello. I picked these up a while back and until now asumed them to have been bronze, then when i was looking closer today noticed they where white on the back. Anyway i tried them at the pencil test which they passed with flying colours which prompted me to clean one up a bit. Sorry i will try and put better pictures up, as there is no H/M i presume they are plated both carrying the Gaunt London mark. What are they please anyone mess dress ?
they messure 30mm wide by 26mm tall Thank you. Iain Last edited by iain; 29-04-15 at 01:39 PM. |

Well, I think you've confirmed mine wasn't made as a sweetheart, but originally military use with lugs I would imagine. Here's mine.

I'm used to seeing this badge as a sweetheart in bronze or silver and enamel.

MGC
thank you. interesting as if they were originally designed as sweathearts with pin back there is no sign of mine being converted to loops.

I thought about this for a while. I was (am) convinced that what you have is a sweethearts badge. It was the Gaunt mark that threw me for a moment but I now remember that there are other sweetheart badges made by Gaunts.
The best opinion will be from Phil aka Staffsyeoman, if he sees this ! |

From what i can see in the pictures both are copies(FAKES) of another original damaged? badge, so i'd say he hasn't got 2 real badges of any sort and as i've only seen these as sweethearts/lapel badges i'll leave it to someone else to say if this pattern was used on any service uniform or not.

Thanks for your replies, they were bought in a bit of haste so maybe i will try and recoup a few of my pennies and start stopping and thinking about what i am looking at in future.

Definitely a sweetheart, lugs and/or a pair notwithstanding. When other ranks took to wearing MGC collar badges universally post-war (some units wore them unofficially during the war) they were small gilding metal, with no scrolls.
Officers post-war wore a half-size silver MGC badge in the cap and as collars (all three were the same size). No scrolls. |
