That is an awful lot of money for what may well be a brand new badge. The regt never wore a/a or q/c and that badge is not in any book which puts it well into the 'exceptionally dodgy' catagorey.

Hi Alan,

Looking at the photos it does look good to me and may well have been made by an official manufacturer for reasons unknown some time back. I would like to get my hans on it though and give it a proper examination.

Taking my experience in collecting German combat badges the main indicator of it being modern will be if the market floods with them but again this is no sheet tin knock off. This often happens when a rare variation of say a Panzer assault badge hits the market - all of a sudden they are everywhere and first start springing up in European flea markets after a slow release then the on line forums and finally dodgy and sometimes honest dealers.

I do remember a Royal Marine Artillery badge in staybrite being sold some time ago by a most respected staybrite collector and I've never seen one since which indicates that it was a genuine staybrite badge if never issued.

Pricewise for this badge it was far too expensive for me as I live in the 25 pound max area unless something exceptional comes up so I doubt if I will ever own one.

Regards

Chris

Chris,

It was some time ago but I am 90% sure that I have seen one of these on ebay before - it was some time ago probably 2003.

Hi Alan,

That date sounds right with me too but I've not seen any since and this was five odd years ago. If they came up one a month or even one ever two months on somewhere like eBay a little alarm bell in my head would ring like it does re: rare variants of German combat badges that appear a little bit to often.

Mind you, small hoards of these items do exist and some mint example of the War Merit Crosses in cases with original cartons were found in the original factory late last year much to the surprise of us collectors and to the factory owners who discoverd these very politically incorrect items up in the factory rafters.

I'll scan my Gloucester Hussary Imperial Yeomanry later - I've only ever seen mine and I think these guys packed up shop in 1921.

Again, it is a genuine badge but why is was made or for who no one seems to know.

Regards

Chris
