Hi Guys,
Can members post images front and rear of their examples of the Queen’s Own Dorset and West Somerset Yeomanry please. There are a few possible variation types that I would like to check. Thanks!!! Regards Chris |

Hi Mate,
Yes, that is the same as one of mine with reconciling die flaws. I'm especially interested if the slider is maker marked - is it: FIRMIN LONDON or FIRMIN. LONDON (note full stop which may be quite light) Regards Chris |

Hi Chris,
Heres my one looks a bit like 54 Bty's one with the Firmin London with no dot. This badge appears to have had some service wear as the high points are slightly worn and the badge may be on it's original cloth backing? Hope these pics are of some use. Best Regards UKbrits |

Your mark is FIRMIN LONDON without the dot. With the fullstop the length of the mark between FIRMIN and LONDON is a lot wider. Your badge has the Firmin marking which has been found on badges attached to sealed pattern cards throughout the 1960's. Regards Chris |

This is mine. The slider is marked FIRMIN . LONDON. However the "." is very, very faint and only visible under a magnifying glass. I hope this helps. Best wishes Gordon |

Looks like there may be two shades of the green backing?

Difficult to tell from you images but it looks like the early marking. Can you reconcile with 54Bty and ukbrits examples? Look at the distance between the two words FIRMIN and LONDON. If there is a dot it will be on the same level as the 'N' in FIRMIN and should be quite distinct. Character height for both marks is 1.25mm height and the mark of FIRMIN LONDON is 11.65 mm long and FIRMIN. LONDON 15.50mm long. Don't try measuring unless you have some digital or dial calipers though or it will drive you nuts. Someone needs to write a book on all this crap... Regards Chris |

QOD&WSY R&F aa Badge
Quote:
When I started this hobby back in c1942 never did I think for one moment it would ever come to this. My other interest was steam engines and, by comparison, rivet counting is so much simpler!! My badge seems similar in all outward respects to those of 54Bty and ukbrits. However, having taken a series of measuremnets with my 4816 Draper, Made in W Germany, calipers, the best I can come up with is a length of 11.80mm. There is no way of measuring the character height of the letters short of taking it to my nearest engineering works. The "." sits equidistant between the feet of the N and F, is very small and shallow but nevertheless is there. I will endeavour to take a better picture or would be equally happy to post it to you for your own examination. Please PM me if that would help this dilemma as I feel sure now that the future of our hobby depends upon a successful outcome to this problem. ( Only joking!) Best wishes Gordon Last edited by 1stTankie; 07-11-10 at 11:14 PM. |
