Hi Dem
I see no problem with it, though others may disagree. I have two with the body of the badge marked as yours, and the slider stamped "J.R. Gaunt London", I also have one with the body unmarked and the slider as yours. I'd just say it is an interesting variation if you collect different makers. Best Graham

The badge is fine..... here is the same on the Gaunt Motto from the same period (early 1970s).
Below is the RMP Officers Cap Badge along with the double marked "J.R.GAUNT LONDON" ORs AA (1960s) -along with the earlier GMs - and your AA Gaunt B'HAM.

Hi Demonic,
Double marked badges are often found. What is interesting is when they are double marked by different makers. Your badge is marked both LONDON and B'HAM. The LONDON mark is to the body as sunk into the die. As such, the die was probably made on or before 1966 while the B'HAM marked slider would have been stamped possibly during 1966 but probably later. After extensive research into the GAUNT markings, the earliest date that I could find on the B'HAM mark, using both master and sealed pattern cards (and also Gaunt correspondence) was January 1967. This, however, implies the mark was used on the slider before the badge in question was commented on being 1966. This event is found in correspondence between Defence Industry Supply Chain (DISC) and L. M. Arnold of Quartermaster General’s Branch (Q (C&GS)1C), from December 1967. Regards Chris |

Thanks Chris for your information.
Would this badge be classed as a Rare piece. Is this a mistake that the slider is marked B.Ham and badge London or is there a lot of this type marked this way around. Thanks again for the information Best Wishes DEM. |

I would not say rare (depends on what one calls rare of course) but it would be scarce/interesting and if I had two of similar condition then, of the two, I would certainly keep this variant. Not a mistake as the die would have been originally cut when the Gaunt mark included LONDON and the slider stamped B'HAM after the Gaunt mark changed to B'HAM. As per previous post; I believe that the change over was during 1966 but remember that your badge could have been created well after this date. Regards Chris |
