John Mills, The Way to the Stars.
A quick look through the T.V. Times shows that this film is being shown on Film 4 at 5pm today. I couldn't help noticing that John Mills is wearing a very unusual cap badge which was probably made for the film, but as he is wearing either R.A. or R.E. grenades on his collar, I wonder what it was meant to represent.

I would say that is the cap badge of 1st Bn. Monmouthshire Regiment which was converted to a searchlight regiment RE in 1938 and transferred to the RA in 1940. I think that John Mills is wearing his own uniform in that photo.

I was wondering if it was the wrong photo , in the movie he wears a different hat. He served in the RE from 1939-1942.

John Mills is an RAF pilot in the film and Bill Owen his air gunner. Classic film. Regards, Paul.

The photo is from his wedding day at Marylebone Registry Office, London, 16 Jan 1941.
"Mills joined 346 Company of the Royal Engineers, a searchlight battery based at Royston in Hertfordshire. Commissioned in autumn 1940, he was posted to 1st Rifle Battalion. |

Thank you, it just goes to show that the photo editors of the online Radio Times are not very thorough in their research, or perhaps they used a stock photograph rather than pay to use a still from the film.
