Crown
I posted this on the "Mystery badge" thread some time ago but it was not positively identified. It is a large crown, 50mm wide and 50mm high. It has lugs that make it look as though its intended use was as a badge.
I have since noticed that it has the K. G. LUKE MELB. makers' mark on the reverse. This rather implies an Australian connection so I am listing it again, here in the Australian section, to see if it rings any bells among the Australian collectors. It was previously suggested that it may have been something to do with Sgt Majors' insignia, was perhaps a cartouche or valise badge or that it was from a piece of harness. I thought a Sgt Major's symbol of rank was usually bullion or woven and the badge appears to be a bit too light to have been used on a harness. That leaves the cartouche or valise badge suggestion. If anyone can confirm that crown badges such as this were used for such purposes in Australia I would be appreciative. I would be equally appreciative of any other confirmation or identification. Thanks for the response, NS! Until I know better, that is likely what it is.
