I believe it to be a copy.

The gilt colour is not correct.
The detail of Brittania is very poor.
The rear of the back plate is coloured in a way I have never seen on any HP's
The lugs are to clean.

I dont like it I'm afraid.

regards

Other than either having been painted or re-plated on the front it looks like a good one to me

Cheers,

Marcus

Overall the plate looks safe, but with these being around for over 100 years not being worn its hard to say from your photo. There is a sharpness to the motto and the silver work that is missing, but this could just be from where and re gilding.
has the scroll got the letters JC in front of the word THE.

My gut feeling is that the plate has been lovingly restored.

John,

Whether the HP is a copy, re-gilded or restored, the bottom line is that my advice would be not to buy it.
There is clearly an issue with it and you should avoid it IMHO.

Following my simple request to the seller.....

Can you confirm that this an original item and not a modern copy

The seller kindly provided this reply:

I am quite sure that it is an original. The velvet center is replaced. I have seen copies of the Home Service Helmet plates and this isn't one of them. The details are crisp, and the plating is right. They may have come up with better copies that I haven't seen yet, but I don't think they will ever be able to match the fire-gilt finish of the originals. As far as I know, nobody does mercury gilding these days, and this plate has the right gilding colour and finish..
Also, I offer a 100% money back on any item I sell if the buyer is not happy with it in any way

Nothing like seeing and handling a badge in the flesh.
