Scottish badges (for a change)
Have been sorting through some of my collection of non Y&L badges and forgot how many Scottish badge I seemed to have collected.
Here's a few for consideration or comments. The middle one seems to have a makers name on the back but I can't make it out. Any ideas? Ivan edit. Does the close up give any more details of the makers mark? Last edited by badger123; 07-10-14 at 07:54 PM. |

Could well be Iain. I'll try and blow the picture up a bit.
Thanks. |

That's a really nice old Cameron's, you would certainly struggle to find a nicer example!

I've never been convinced about these 2 though (not least because someone bought them for me with a pile of other stuff).

Both copies I am afraid. The lug placing is a give away.

Thought so Alan and thanks, no great shakes as had nothing invested in them.

Alan, which way should the lugs be? I have the same pair and would like to know. I don't have them in front of me at the moment, though.

Hi David
I’m sure Alan will get back on the lug placement on genuine badges as this is an excellent initial indicator (as well as braise pre-marking), but with regard to the Highland Regiment there are some other glaring differences between a genuine and fake one that can be seen from the front. The differences deserve a thread of their own, but without giving too much away to the fakers, here goes: The stippling on fakes almost runs in straight lines, running from the outside of the quoit to the inside. This is very evident just above the buckle (between the buckle and word Highland). The stippling on genuine badges is very random and very deep – like gravel. The thistle on a fake looks like it’s been run over by a Foden. The genuine thistle is rounded and doesn’t have the deep etch marks to the leaves seen on fakes. The pin on the buckle is much sharper almost going to a point. On fakes it’s blunt. On the curved part of the claymore hand guard where your knuckles would be if you grasped the hilt, there is a square bit. On fakes this square is made up of 9 square dots (3 across & 3 down) on the genuine it is a rounded device (could be a stylized rose?). There are a few more indicators, but I’m sure that’s enough to spot a fake Highland Regiment badge from the front. With regard to the Lowland Regiment, I guess it’s all about lug placement – 4 versus 2 etc. I haven’t been able to spot the difference between a fake and a genuine from the front. I also have one with a period slider. Maybe a member can let us know if there are differences from the front that give the game away. I’d be very interested. Cheers Mark |

Ivan, the Liverpool Scottish (Cameron) badge is Pattern 11247/1939. The Ministry of Supply ledgers record Gaunt as the makers - I have the numbers made somewhere. The stamp on yours should read J.R.GAUNT.LONDON but there are large numbers of unstamped examples from the same die.
