I can imagine the portrait being comissioned after his death, and the bars he was entitled to added. As a painter I wouldn't bother mixing the dark colour if the bullion badge came on a maroon backing.
As far as images with dark backing, get hold of a copy of Lewis Golden 'Echoes from Arnhem' between pp. 76-77, Caythorpe spring 1944 photo middle row 2nd from right, and HQ officers 1st PARA Bde photo Lieutenant JB Cairns. http://www.216parasigs.org.uk/history/1ads3.htm what about plate 10 Lieutenant Polley? Dear Thomas.
Still not convinced with plate 10 from 216 Para Sigs site. No way to show it is balck backing or blue backing or even maroon !!!!!! Chris |

I hope this is of relevance to you. The attached badge came with the effects of an officer who served during WW2 in 51st (Highland) Division. The badge was attached to a rather mothy ToS and is clearly home made using a standard o/r badge, the felt backing is a little darker than in the pics due to lighting

Dear Old Smelly.
Very nice to see. I do know that it is believed to have been an instrument mechanic of the original SS Brigade Signal Squadron during WWII who cut up his original Jimmy badge in the same way as the illustration you have shown. This went on to be used with the permission of the then CO of the said Signal Squadron by all members. It is thought that this action was the fore runner of the 1946 Official Jimmy badge. This action was taken before the Airborne Signals badge was used by Officers which was santioned in ACI 1596 of July 1942 for the wearing of a Maroon Beret by Airborne forces. I have a photo of a member of the Highland Infantry Division Signals wearing a TOS with a Black Watch backing on my little web site but his badge has not been cut down. (Illustration below) Perhaps your illustration could be an enterprising officer of the Division trying to duplicate what the Airborne Division had done with their beret badge !!!! What ever the reason very nice to see. Best wishes Chris Walker www.signalsbadges.co.uk |

Interesting Signals Badge
Dear Alan O
Thanks for the sight of the interesting Signals Badge. I have seen this in both Brass and Bronze versions of this badge. Colin Hodgkins has the bronze version in his collection. I have attached a copy of his badge. Thought to be a locally made Indian version but we are both open to any other ideas. Hope the photo arrives ok. Cheers Chris Walker UK 0521 (1).jpg |

Interesting Signals Badge
Dear Mike.
Only a guess but I think post 1947 and pre 1954 otherwise it would have still been the roundal type badge don't you think. Question is. who was it made for???? Private purchase for an Officers do you think. Only problem is I have seen this version in Brass and Bronze. Always the thought that it was worn by a unit with their own badges. |This I am advised did happen in the sub continent of India. Anyones thoughts would be interesting to hear. Cheers Chris Walker |
