On all those I have seen/ handled the pips etc are secured to the chains in exactly the same way they are attached to cloth, the lugs pass through the chains and are secured from behind with split pins.

Shoulder chains
Hi Andrew, As Peter correctly states most have lugs and the split pins
are hidden underneath, there are however some with threaded posts which takes a small nut & washer. best regards John |

....an example of screw post pips here. Note the leather washers. (also showing the STs fixed with a split pin through the loops, the button is fixed by the same).

Here's one that I have. So far I've been unable to ID the unit but I would really love to narrow it down. They came with a lot of other items, including a couple of framed pics of cavalry regiment uniforms, and a WWII MC group of medals, British so unnamed. Probably an estate clear out so I haven't been able to ID the recipient and the red/orange backing to the chains is also a mystery. Maybe an Indian Reg?
There is quite a gap between the first pip and the end of the chain but no evidence of a title having been fitted. Cheers, Alex |

Hi Griff
That is interesting, thanks. When I posted these years ago, nobody knew of any regiments that had backings to the chains. Now, do you know of any officers in either of those regiments that was awarded an MC in 1943? Maybe I could narrow it down. Would have been in North Africa or Italy. Photo of medals attached.
