Regimental colours?
Can anyone help with a general list of regimental colours? This is in relation to those infantry regiments that had a battalion converted to tanks during WWII plus the RTR TA battalions pre-war.
It's always useful to know what these colours were when coming across flashes etc worn by these units, colours such as red and yellow for the Suffolks. I've tried a search here on the forum but no luck. If it would make it easier for me to provide a list of the regiments in question, let me know. A list online or in a reference book that gave some historical background would be ideal, many thanks. John |

Gallagher's did a 1939 cigarette card series of 48 on British Army Badges, showing badges and ribbons in regimental colours.
I have the set somewhere......... |

Based on Mike's suggestion I came up with these two sites - http://www.frontiernet.net/~ericbush/MiSh/Regt.html & https://armylists.org.uk/badges.htm which could be complementary but Gallagher's are spot on. John |

I wasn't going to bother posting this link, thinking that the additional units to the Gallagher's cigarette card set wouldn't be relevant to WWII armour, but here it is:

I hadn't explored the New York Public Library digi-collection further than a quick search on "badge", I'll have to check specific units, it looks to be a very interesting site.
Gallagher presumably stuck with a limit of 48 cards to their series, hence the regiments missing (then again Players managed sets of cards comprising far more than 48). The Gallagher's set were copied by another company in more recent times, I don't know if the regiments were updated or whether the "new" set was a straight copy. I'm not sure if I've got the later set. Edit: I have got the later set, or rather, most of it. Army Badges Past And Present, a series of 25 by "Phillips Choice Tea" (I'm missing number 21). There are a few units such as REME which don't appear in the Gallagher set, some of the badges shown have St Edwards Crown, some,eg The Buffs, show a different pattern to the "ribbon". A "similar" set was produced by Amalgamated Tobacco,
These sets, Gallagher, Phillips and Amalgamated can be had in mint condition for a total of about £20 the three. |
