Silver GVIR RMP Officers Cap badge ??
Has anyone got one? I had one years ago that I considered suspect, thinking it was a regular brass one that had been silvered. It had a slider rather than officer type lugs but mostly my suspicion was that a GVIR Officers badge wouldn't exist as I thought no officers were gazetted into the Corps until after the introduction of the EIIR badge.
However, I just picked up this silver plated officer collar dog which is GVIR. Looks like I'll have to try to track down the one I got rid of. Anyone else got, or seen, a GVIR Officers cap badge ? |

If it had a slider then it is 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999% certain to be an ORs cap badge.. Many of those commissioned from the ranks during the Wars however may be reluctant to pay out for a new badge on becoming an officer. It is my opinion that many OSD finished slidered OR badges were those worn by soldiers promoted to officer status who just painted their badges brown! After all who would have the bo**ocks to check?
Some may have gone a step further and had them silver plated, for sentimental or even parsimonious reasons.. The RMP do not have directly commissioned officers? Andy |

Officers were not gazetted into the RMP until May 1954, but oxidized silver plating on brass badges were around from then onwards, for officers who were now part of the Corps. They were very short lived because of change to the EiiR cypher badge.
Another possibility is a Warrant Officer's Class 1 cap badge or RMP Quartermaster's cap badge worn from about 1946 to 1953/4 Rgds, fougasse1940. |

So, the silvered one I had some time back was, (assuming it hadn't been messed with) most likely a WO1 Cap Badge, and if I understand it correctly then, there could indeed be genuine silvered Officers GVIR Cap Badge out there dating from the tiny time frame between the first officers being Gazetted, and the EIIR badge actually being produced and issued ?

Intelligence Corps Officers' Cap Badges
Although "Officers were not gazetted into the RMP until May 1954" does this actually mean that there were no officers in the CMP or RMP who wore the CMP or RMP cap badge during their service prior to 1954?
The Intelligence Corps had no Regular Commissioned officers until 1958 but there were numerous WW2 Temporary Officers and post war National Service Officers who wore the cap badge in KC OSD and in KC and QC Silver Plate: A few examples here in my album: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=11970

Just found this which links to a picture of an RMP officer wearing a GVIR KC cap badge at Inkerman Barracks - photo not dated.

I agree it is a cracking photo, but I do have a question the photo being in black and white I find it difficult to tell if the officers actually wore the 'Red cap' or not.

Hi everyone - new to the site so I hope that I can add some real value to Militray Police (MP) and Provost (Pro) related matters. Firstly, if I may, some history: as has been mentioned in earlier posts it was not until [3rd March] 1954 that it was authorized for Officers of the Regular Army to be commissioned directly into the Corps of Royal Military Police (RMP). Up until that time, Regular Officers were attached to the CMP/RMP to serve in Provost Officer appointments (DAPM/APM etc) & retained their parent regiment cap-badges, uniforms and accoutrements etc. Between 15 May - 28 Jul 1954, 163 Officers were gazetted as having been transferred to the RMP, all of whom were then serving with the Corps. Before that date (since 1949), Officers serving with RMP had had the individual option of wearing RMP badges & uniforms & many infact did. A further 43 regular officers had transferred to RMP by 15 May 1955. So As to officer's silver cap-badges: what I think we have is: CMP/RMP gazetted Quartermasters serving with the CMP/RMP prior to 1954, badged CMP/RMP & could have worn 'silver' cap-badges (& I have seen a silvered War Economy Measure GVIR CMP cap-badge at Bosley's) although officially they were only authorized to wear the ORs brass cap badge;. Officers serving with the Special Investigation Branch CMP/RMP generally wore General Service Corps badges (albeit they often wore any Regimental badge (British, Colonial or Commonwealth) as part of their investigative duties); post 1949, Officers in the TA & AER (& National Service) had commissioned directly into RMP so it could be posited that they wore Officers' silver cap-badges etc; & finally, as to Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1), my reserach has found that the officer's pattern silver cap-badge (and collar dogs) was adopted unofficially in 1957, by WO1s, but at their own expense. The official date that is accepted as the recognized date for WO1 wearing Officers badges is: (WO Memo) WOM/BR/1019/PM1 dated 22 Aug 1961, which was then written into Corps Dress Regs, in line with other Arms & Services that 'WO Collar & Cap Badges - WOs1 are permitted to wear Officers' pattern Cap & Collar badges'. So in sum, silver CMP/RMP GVIR cap badges would have been in circulation during his reign but probaly only officially from 1949 onwards; from 1954 onwards, became standard wear for all RMP Officers; anf from 1957 unofficially for WO1 and thence officially from 1961. I hope this is of interest/use - Jeremy

Hi All,
I have only recently acquired a Royal Military Police GviR OR's gilding metal badge. Are they particularly scarce compared with the Military Police badges? Thanks, Tinto |

Hi Tinto,
As the new pattern of cap-badge with the scroll 'Royal Military Police' was not approved and sealed until 14 May 1948, and the King's reign ended with his death on 6th Feb 1952, it is fair to say that a genuine 'Royal' GVIR RMP cap-badge is comparatively rare when compared to CMP 'Military Police' badges, particularly given the size of the Corps of Military Police during the 2WW (c. 33,0000) before it gained the 'Royal' suffix on 28th November 1946, and the rapid reduction of the Corps post-war. |
