Default PENCIL - WW1?

Hi all, I wanted to ask the more knowledgeable of the team on this pencil I picked up recently. I think that it wasn't for the Princess mary tin as it doesn't have the cypher on the side and that it is a propelling pencil as opposed to the standard pencil stuffed into the bullet tip.

I have it from a reliable source that they saw one like this at a show where the Western Front Association was, it was on a table with a complete content sample of the tin; cigarettes, card etc

Would anyone have some info on this type and what it was issued for.

Many thanks

Simon.

I think the WW1 gift tins had a normal pencil in a very similar case. This appears to be a lead holder rather than a true pencil

Very nice thing!!!

Kynoch ammo was the preference of the Machine Gun Corps for its Vickers guns with a belief that it was better made. This is difficult to substantiate scientifically, but the view was expressed. Otherwise, agreed. Not from the tin.

Hi Chap's

Yes Eddie, the one's I have seen has the M cypher towards the top of the case and instead of KYNOCHS BIRMINGHAM they have KN 14 VII.

But with this propelling in place of the standard wood cased pencil, I thought I'd take a shot. Then being told one had been seen on show by the WFA; I thought it would be at least WW1 - maybe an officer version. There again it could be a product sold during the war for private purchase to send to a loved one at the front.

I'll keep trying to find out.

Thanks chaps

Simon.
