I too had my interesting experiences with ignorant mainland police during the Troubles and for that matter with ignorant Toms who seemed determined to recruit as many IRA supporters as they could.

I have many Muslim friends, educated, travelled people, but I am becoming increasing frustrated that I cannot defend them because they will not speak up against the cancer of fundamentalism.

So I say again, it's too late to sit on the fence - if you are not actively against terrorism you are part of the problem. Ever single one of us has to speak up and challenge the fanatics, be they preaching hate in a mosque or slagging off Taigs in the pub.
Sitting on the fence is part of living in our democracy mate. It lets those who want to stay away from trouble avoid it - in the most part.

That comes from the Irish male name Tadgh. It was very popular at one time hence its usage; kind of like "Paddy" is used for Irishmen.

Ah well - best of luck; just don't blame me when somebody kicks the fence out from under you and stamps on your dream of democracy.

Happy New Year BTW.

Eddie

PS BTW Voltaire never sad anything about fighting for freedom of speech - it was his biographer describing his attitude to life.

Well, it's a line from a biography about Voltaire called "The friends of Voltaire" by Eveyn Beatrice Hall published in 1906. This line was in regards to Voltaire's stance on Claude Adrien Helvetius. So, a paraphrase, really.

Probably the best post on here thanks.

I travelled extensively between the Republic and the Uk during the late 70's and 80's visiting family in London, only once did I meet an ignorant policeman/official the rest were courteous and professional.

Last time the fence was kicked out from under me (and all of us) I answered the call and I will do again if still fit to do so.

So it continues onward, the enemy within, I wish that European governments would wake up and grasp the sad reality and seize the initiative.
