Sitting on the fence is part of living in our democracy mate. It lets those who want to stay away from trouble avoid it - in the most part.

Well, it's a line from a biography about Voltaire called "The friends of Voltaire" by Eveyn Beatrice Hall published in 1906. This line was in regards to Voltaire's stance on Claude Adrien Helvetius. So, a paraphrase, really.

I travelled extensively between the Republic and the Uk during the late 70's and 80's visiting family in London, only once did I meet an ignorant policeman/official the rest were courteous and professional.
