Buttons on Brigadier's KD tunic
Its cold, silent night in port. stand duty for midwatch.
I just picked up this KD tunics 8months ago, theres named to N.W.Gwatkin. he was a Brigadier in 1943-45 5th Guards Armoured Brigade. Theres shiny buttons on his tunic. But i've never seen before like this one. i think its Royal Tudor rose, same as HMS Duke of York's crest. 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' Why he didn't get that Coldstream Guards button? Any comments will be appreciated. Choi Last edited by Focuslight; 06-12-16 at 06:18 PM. Reason: Photo misedited |

Hi Focuslight,
Button looks like that for The Royal Fusiliers. I see by his write-up on Google that he also served in the Royal Household. Cheers, Tinto Last edited by Tinto; 06-12-16 at 06:50 PM. Reason: Added information |

Captain Coldstream Guards and Adjutant at Sandhurst in 1932.

Spot on Tinto, the button shown is indeed that for The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).

Gwatkin [1896-1971] ended his days as a Knight (GCVO KCMG) and very senior courtier, including a stint as Comptroller in the Lord Chamberlain's office. He was a Guardsman through and through however; those Royal Fusiliers buttons do not compute.

The buttons should be General Staff - Cipher of the Monarch (GVIR) within the garter "Honi Soit Qui Mal y Pense" surmounted by a King's Crown.
If the correct buttons were not available the Royal Fusiliers is a close substitute? Tim

From the photo it looks as if there is a slight mis-match of rank badges, obviously possible but not quite what one would expect from an officer of this rank?
Given that the buttons are wrong, I do wonder whether they and the rank badges have been added and some point to an otherwise 'empty' jacket? Roger |

I am not saying it is the case here but it is not unknown for all insignia to be removed from a tunic and the bare item is then sold on. The buyer then adds whatever he can find to reinstate the tunic.

As a KD khaki drill jacket metal badges and buttons would be removed when the garment was laundered.
