My SA Artillery Badge boards
Hi Guys
Been collecting these for 35 odd years, there are some RA and a few Commonweath artillery badges in the left window of the big frame. Appologies about the poor quality pictures. Brian Last edited by Brian Conyngham; 10-11-11 at 02:41 PM. |

Wow, that is a grand collection. I like your board of titles. The Maxim is very cool. The first I have seen. Very nicely displayed too. Regards Andrew

Yes ditto on the "WOW". I'll have to show the wife what's coming in the future for the library once I get to frame mine......

Thanks guys for the feedback,
Artillery badges do make an attractive display. Inherited my son's bedroom when he moved out a few years ago. It finally gave me a space to lay out my collection. As some of these members on this forum will now I am also on the British Medal Forum and would have seen my medal showcase there. Andrew, another extremely rare shoulder title is bottom right.....the 5th Bty Orange Free State Artillery, according to Dr Curzons it is "non existant" however lucky for me I have this one, given to me by a collector in Durban who knew my passion for these artillery badges a few years back. Very very nice............ I see you have a number that I have been after for years, it was possibly my own fault for taking a greater interest in medalsthat I am now drooling all over my keyboard. Armoured Trains has been a holy grail for me and still is, glad to see you also have a 5th Bty OFSA and a 4th Bty OFSA, I am still looking for one of those. Andrew you must keep a look out for brass HA shoulder titles, they are not in Owens but were used by the Heavy Artillery in GSWA and are often overlooked as "unknown" when they turn up. There are a number of versions, so far I have 3. Glad to have had a chat this morning, I had a look through my few duplicates and sorry I don't have a brass NFA I am sure I passed it on to a mate a year or two back but will keep my eye open for another. Hi Brian,
As you are the fundy on SA artillery, I hope you can help witha few queries. I am slowly putting together a small collection of UDF PF insignia and have questions about the artillery insignia. From my research the PF artillery consisted of SAMR batteries from 1913 - 1920. SAFA 1922 - 1934, SAPGA 1922 - 1934 and then these all amalgamated into SAA in 1934. My query relates to the following: 1. Various sorces have the collar badges 1922 - 1926 as a bimetal flaming grenade with 'South Africa Zuid Afrika' in white metal on brass grenade. And the post 1926 badge in all brass with the titles on a separate scroll beneath in english and afrikaans. I have seen the 1st pattern badge a few times now in all brass with the titles on the grenade in english and afrikaans. Is this an interim period between the two above or badges used by another artillery unit or possibly FAKES? There was an article on the SA Artillery and there insignia in the 1943 edition of Nongqui and this version is not mentioned or shown at all. 2. The second pattern with scroll below grenade I see you have in a bronze/black finish. Were these worn by WO's 3. The SAA title presumably adopted in 1934 I have only ever come across in a bronze finish. Were these maybe a later WWII issue, or only worn by WO (as they wore bronze badges) or maybe these were only for the CF units and the SAFA and SAPGA (PF) still wore there original bi-lingual titles through to WWII. Any assistance will be appreciated. Regards Steven |

Well done Brian!
The pics are impressive, but I can imagine how much more impressive that collection must be facing them. Have you any idea on how many pieces you are short from "completing" your Artillery collection? |
