Help with Medal's identification, Info , Valuation
Hi forum friends, My friend at work brought a medal in that hes been given, I said I'd help him try and find some info, the medal has number 880 , S.S.M J Hunt and Driscoll's Scouts on it rim, plus the two bars. have attached picture.
I have establised he is John Hunt , squadron sergant Major. But thats all I know, as I'm a WW2 collector. Any help on this medal and its recipiant would be really helpfull, also any idea's of value for Insurance etc would be much appreciated. |

first has 2c2146 PTE H Bissell R. WAR. R on it and the other, 159892 SPR. E. Dodgson. R.E I belive all of these medals may be pasrt of his relatives, so thats why we are keen to obtain soem research on them if possible. |

Hi,
First one is a Kings Africa Medal with the two available bars... 1901 and 1902. If you try the great place the www.victorianwars.com they can help you with the finer details. Tom

Rank on Boer War medal
SSM is Squadron Sergeant Major, as I understand it.
A post on the British Mecal Forum should turn up trumps? Regards, Kevin |

Hunt's medal is the King's South Africa Medal for service in the Anglo-Boer War. To qualify for it, he must also have qualified for the Queen's SA Medal, so that ought to be somewhere, waiting to be reunited with its partner.
Bissell's and Dodgson's medals are the British War Medal, for service in World War I. Either or both may also be missing partners, i.e. the 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star, or the Victory Medal. As Kevin suggests, the British Medal Forum is likely to turn up trumps. There's an extraordinary wealth of knowledge there.

Thanks for all the info guys and quick responces, Is there any way of finding out anything about the Driscoll Scouts, as in a register, pictures etc? as I'm guessing being a S.S.M he held a reasonable position that might enable a bit more research? Also the value is for insurnace only, their is no intention on selling these, as they are aprt of his family, but I have to be honest i have no idea, if being a S.S.M makes any difference to value

I am always looking early (pre 1939) British ribbon bars with foreign awards; interesting devices or just different construction solutions. Also I am seeking Royal Dublin Fusiliers items. I can help in small scale to research RDF soldiers (MICs, medal rolls, additional information, etc). |
