Reviving an old thread regarding the SATC shoulder title.
I came across an article in the September 1943 edition of the Nongqai magazine on the history of the South African Tank Corps. There is mention that dress regulations were first laid down in October 1941 and included the following: 1. Cap and collar badges will be worn 2. Lanyards to be of khaki and worn over right shoulder 3. No shoulder titles are worn 4. Battle dress is worn open neck. Shirts if worn without collar and tie. 5. Sleeves of battle dress and shirts to be rolled up neatly at the elbow. So it appears the known SATC shoulder titles may have been only worn prior to October 1941 with the first pattern badges and when the second pattern was produced/issued c. September 1941, shoulder titles were no longer worn. Also noted was that the first badge as worn by No1 Armoured Car Company was in white metal and fretted. Subsequent badges were in gilding metal, fretted as well as solid (un-fretted). The un-fretted ones were also issued in a bronzed finish. The second pattern badge was issued in white metal, though I have seen silver ones (probably officer private purchase) as well as a poor stamping in gilding metal (possibly samples or first issues pre the standard white metal issue) Steven |

Just adding another twist to the discussion on SATC shoulder titles.
I think the consensus on the UK made SATC title with looped lugs has not yet been finalized, so I want to add another possibility for this title. I was going through a list of abbreviations for WWI units as seen on the medal index cards at the National Archives. One of these was for S.A.T.C. (South African Transport Corps) and I am proposing that this larger, typically more WWI title, may be to this unit. See second picture at https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...43&postcount=3 Any thoughts? Last edited by Milmed; 21-06-22 at 09:06 AM. |

Hi Steven,
Thanks for your message. Trade, Transport or Tank .. that is the question ! Your information is helpful. I should be happy to find any good period portrait showing the title. Best regards .. Herve |

Hi, the British seemed quite pragmatic about shoulder titles in WW1. The T.C. title being transferred from a proposed Transport Corps to the Tank Corps, presumably a case of waste not want not. Maybe the SA war office were the same?, best wishes Mike. PS I'm at work at the moment and just saw these updates, when I get home I will look at my titles again
