Default French? WW1? Officers?????

Hi all

Prompted by viewing some footage of French WW1 veterans on YouTube and other related material, I remembered getting this "relic" way back.

It would no doubt have a story behind it and, while soldiers would often exchange buttons and badges, how would the man explain this to the stores department?

So is this French (the colour would suggest this) and is it part of an officer's uniform or other ranks? A very quick Google search has been not very helpful on this occasion and even entering my search in French wasn't much better.

It's completely valueless but the story behind it must would be well worth hearing....
