WW1 ID Discs?
Hello everyone,
Bit clueless on these as not my thing, just saw them and liked them. They were advertised as WW1 however I understand they even make ‘replica’ discs these days albeit the leather (shoelace?) looks very old. My questions are, are they original and if so what period? And is there anyone who can tell me anything about the individual? I assume meth is Methodist but I cannot even see what Regiment he was... If they are duff please don’t spare my feelings, they cost less than the obvious replicas on eBay. Many thanks, Luke |

They are original but given that no regiment is mentioned on the tags they are not Great War vintage. The number 20545 would suggest a pre 1920 regimental number but without a regiment named it could also suggest a post 1920 officer. I have checked the London Gazette and there are no officers called Ruscoe listed. The number 20545 brings up the name of a R.A.F. officer with a different name.

Thanks Simon. So later than WW1 rather than replica I assume?
Any idea what these jumble of letters mean in the middle of the disc? They didn’t come out very well in the first pic. |

Definitely not replica. The fact that no record exists in the medal rolls or the gazette may just mean that he had no overseas service during either war. Civilians such as A.F.S. and N.F.S. personnel were issued tags. The A.T.S. and the W.R.A.F. were too and they leave very little trace in the records that are in the public domain. I cannot make out the letters in the middle from your photograph. A paper tracing may help to decipher it.

Cheers Simon. That’s really interesting and good to know. I’ll give it a try in the morning.
