WWI RAMC patch
Hello,
I've done a quick search but couldn't find anything so can anyone help me out with the patch under the shoulder title in the photo? The photo is the best I can get I’m afraid and the patch/sign appears to be only one colour. The photo was taken in 1918. Another question I have is that I thought shoulder titles were brass during WWI, were cloth titles brought in later in the war? Thanks Tony Last edited by Tonyn; 01-05-15 at 08:27 PM. |

Is there a book or an online source that can possibly help me out?
Just about all searches I’ve tried give varying detailed descriptions on US, Canadian and AIF badges but I’ve found little to nothing in British badges. In case anyone else with as little knowledge as me on the subject should stumble cross cloth shoulder titles and wonder when they were used in WWI, it appears to have been from 1917 onwards from what I've found online. Tony,
Cloth S/Ts introduced Apr 1916 worn from Jun 1916 ordered to be worn on the top of the sleeve in 1917. The cloth strip will probably denote the unit he was serving with. regards Mark Quote:

Mark,
Thanks a lot for the reply and correction. It's his unit I'm after to hopefully carry out a bit of research but I haven't found anything regarding a single, dark coloured stripe. Tony |

I've found a book online called Divisional & Other Signs, is this book worth buying and might I find an answer to my question there?
Not living in an English speaking country makes it a little difficult to find what's on the market especially as I have no knowledge about badges. Thanks for any reply. Tony |

Tony,
The book will give you useful guidance on the divisional signs of WWI but the coloured bar in your photo is almost certainly a unit sign ie below divisional level. There is much still unknown on these unit signs and even less published. The embryo Imperial War Museum made an effort to collect information on them in WWI but their records are incomplete especially for the supporting troops such as the RAMC. I hate to be a killjoy but I don't think it will be possible to get a firm identification of the unit from the flash. Jon |

Jon,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply. I've already ordered the book and even if it doesn't help with this query it'll no doubt help with something else in the future, especially as badges and insignia are completely new to me. Yes it's unfortunate the info isn't easy to find but I might ask on the Great War Forum just in case ..... Cheers Tony |
